GPTZero is a well-known AI detector built mainly for teachers and students, with a free plan of 10,000 words a month. The catch, as this GPTZero review shows: tight free limits, recurring billing complaints and no humanizer to revise the text it flags. Our top pick is Essai, which pairs a free AI detector with an AI humanizer.

Below you'll find GPTZero's plans and prices as of October 2026, what the company and outside researchers say about its accuracy, what its users report, and how it stacks up against Essai. Want to check a draft right now? Essai's free AI detector returns an AI probability score, and the AI humanizer is designed to make flagged passages read naturally while keeping your meaning.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • A usable free tier. You get 10,000 words a month, and a single scan can run up to 10,000 characters.
  • Clear verdicts. Each result labels text as human, mixed or AI, highlights the sentences behind the call and shows a confidence score.
  • Classroom extras. Writing Replay shows how a Google Doc was written, and the Professional plan connects to Canvas and Google Classroom.

Cons

  • No AI humanizer. GPTZero can tell you a draft looks AI-written, but it has no humanizer to rework the phrasing.
  • Tight free limits. Free users get one Advanced Scan, no downloadable reports and batches of three files, and the plan comparison lists plagiarism checking only on paid plans.
  • Pricier than Essai. Premium costs $23.99 a month on monthly billing as of October 2026, against $14.99 for Essai Basic, and a single scan tops out at 50,000 characters unless you move up to Professional at $45.99.
  • Billing complaints. Trustpilot reviewers repeatedly describe unexpected trial, renewal and annual charges and hard cancellations, and the TrustScore stood at 2.1 from 145 reviews in October 2026.
  • Admitted false positives. GPTZero says no detector is perfect and some human writing gets classified as AI. Its help center adds that accuracy drops on short or heavily edited text and that procedural writing can be flagged.
  • Your text is kept. GPTZero stores a copy of what you submit through its dashboard, though it says it does not share it with third parties.
  • Adults only. The Terms of Use say the site is intended for users 18 and older, which matters if you are still in high school.

Key features

GPTZero packs a lot into its dashboard, but much of the depth sits on paid plans. Here is what you get and where the limits are.

AI detection and Advanced Scan

Paste text or upload a file, and GPTZero labels it as written by a human, by AI or by a mix of both, with sentence highlights and a certainty indicator. GPTZero says its newest model, GPTZero 4o, became the default for all users on September 20, 2026, along with Masked Detection, which ignores headings. The limits: free users get a single Advanced Scan, and the help center says a low-certainty result means the text looks unlike GPTZero's training data, so it deserves extra caution.

AI Patterns

Added to Advanced Scan in August 2026, AI Patterns points to ten habits that show up more often in chatbot writing, such as "Not just X, but Y" framing, ideas grouped in threes and claims credited to unnamed experts. GPTZero itself says a pattern is not proof of AI authorship, since human writers use the same structures. Each match comes with an explanation, but rewriting the passage is up to you.

Writing Replay

The GPTZero Chrome extension records how a Google Doc was written and plays it back, with notes on large pastes and typing patterns, and Writing Replay Anywhere records typing on other supported sites. Replays from signed-out sessions are deleted after 30 days. A replay documents how a text was written; it does not help you improve it.

Plagiarism, grammar and writing tools

Grammar checking comes with every plan. Plagiarism checking is murkier: GPTZero's plagiarism checker page says it is free under the 10,000-word plan, while the pricing comparison lists it only under Premium and Professional. Writing feedback and source finding with auto-generated citations are paid extras.

Integrations, API and privacy

Professional adds Canvas and Google Classroom integration, and developers buy separate API plans that start at 300,000 words a month. GPTZero keeps a copy of text submitted through its dashboard and uses it in aggregate to improve the service, and it says text sent through the API is not stored. The help center lists English plus more than 20 other languages, while the homepage names English, German, Portuguese, French and Spanish as fully supported.

GPTZero pricing (as of October 2026)

GPTZero sells three individual plans plus team and API options, and it localizes prices by country. The US-dollar figures below come from the plan data behind the GPTZero pricing page, as archived on October 10, 2026. Loaded from Germany on October 16, 2026, the same page listed Premium at €18.99 a month and Professional at €35.99.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingWords per monthCharacters per scanFiles per batch
Free$0$010,00010,0003
Premium$23.99 a month$155.88 a year ($12.99 a month)300,00050,00050
Professional$45.99 a month$299.88 a year ($24.99 a month)500,000150,000250

Read the plan rules before you pay:

  • Free trial. The Terms of Use mention a 14-day free trial for new users, after which the chosen subscription is charged. Several Trustpilot complaints involve exactly these trial and annual charges, so note your renewal date.
  • Overage. The Professional plan card lists up to 2 million words of overage, while a help article prices overage at $0.00046 per word and caps it at 1 million extra words.
  • Cancellation. Canceling takes effect at the end of the current paid term, and the help center offers a pause of one, two or three months.
  • Refunds and rollover. No refund window is publicly listed, so you have to contact support. Whether unused monthly words roll over is not publicly listed either.

Essai costs less at both entry points: Basic is $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026, and every paid plan includes unlimited AI detection on top of the humanizer. You can also start free, since a free Essai account adds detailed reports and unlimited detector scans. All three plans are on the Essai pricing page.

Is GPTZero accurate?

GPTZero publishes strong accuracy numbers, but its own help center lists real limits, and outside research shows that AI text written in a specific author's style slips past it more often. A GPTZero score is a probability, not proof.

What GPTZero claims

GPTZero's homepage claims 99% accuracy. It also cites the RAID benchmark, where it says it caught 95.7% of AI texts while flagging 1% of human texts as AI. For GPTZero 4o, the company reports one false positive across 10,402 student essays in the PERSUADE dataset, and in October 2026 it said 4o labeled all 914 essays by English language learners in a held-out test set as human-written. All of these figures come from GPTZero itself.

What outside research shows

  • Epoch AI (July 2026). In a study of three detectors, GPTZero missed 32 of 297 AI passages written to imitate a real author's style, compared with 2 of 297 written from simple prompts. Epoch evaluated a May 2026 GPTZero model, before 4o became the default.
  • Graphite (May 2026). On about 15,700 web articles published before ChatGPT's release, Graphite's study found a 1.355% false positive rate for GPTZero. GPTZero itself calls this research it conducted with Graphite.
  • Liang et al. (2023). The study in Patterns ran seven detectors, including an early-2023 version of GPTZero, on 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers. The detectors averaged a 61.22% false positive rate, and 89 of the 91 essays were flagged by at least one of them.

Why GPTZero flags human writing

AI detectors score how predictable a text looks. GPTZero's homepage names perplexity (how predictable the wording is), burstiness (how much sentences vary) and style as common signals, and formulaic or templated writing can look predictable for perfectly honest reasons.

GPTZero's help center lists its own limits: accuracy improves with longer text, sentence-level results are weaker than document-level ones, most training data is adult English prose, and procedural or machine-like text can be flagged. GPTZero also says its results should not be used to punish students. Small error rates add up at scale, too: when Vanderbilt disabled Turnitin's AI detector in 2023, it noted that a 1% false positive rate across the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have meant around 750 papers wrongly labeled.

If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives walks through next steps, and teachers can follow a fair process for checking student essays. If you use AI tools for coursework, check your course policy first.

Essai's AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent and works best on 150 words or more. In Essai's internal testing, our detector outperformed GPTZero on many of the criteria we track.

What users say

GPTZero's public ratings split sharply by platform, as of October 2026:

  • Trustpilot: a TrustScore of 2.1 out of 5 from 145 reviews, half of them one-star. The recurring complaints are human writing flagged as AI, charges after a free trial or for an annual plan the reviewer did not expect, and difficult cancellation.
  • Chrome Web Store: the extension holds 4.6 out of 5 from 741 ratings. In its reviews, a repeated request is support for Google Slides and other Google apps.

If you plan to pay for GPTZero, the Trustpilot page is the one to read: most recent reviews there describe a billing or accuracy problem.

What Essai users say

Here is how Essai users describe the humanizer in their own words:

"Essai has greatly simplified my physics studies. The ability to humanize essays while keeping my original meaning intact has been incredibly helpful for my assignments." (Marcus Thompson, Essai user)
"I used to spend hours rewriting essays. Now Essai does it in seconds. The text humanizer is incredibly accurate and saves me so much time on every assignment." (Robert Kim, Essai user)
"I've tested many alternatives, but nothing comes close to the quality Essai provides." (Priya Sharma, Essai user)

GPTZero vs Essai

GPTZero stops at telling you whether text looks AI-written. Essai covers both halves of the job: an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and a free AI detector to check the result. Prices are as of October 2026.

Why Essai is the better GPTZero alternative

  • Detect and revise in one place. GPTZero only tells you a draft looks AI-written. Essai's humanizer and detector live in the same web app, so you can humanize a draft and check it in one workflow.
  • More free detection. A free Essai account gives you unlimited scans and detailed reports, while GPTZero's free plan stops at 10,000 words a month and leaves out downloadable reports.
  • Lower prices. As of October 2026, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, against $23.99 or $12.99 for GPTZero Premium.
  • Unlimited detection on paid plans. Every Essai paid plan includes unlimited AI detection, while GPTZero caps Premium at 300,000 words a month.
  • A humanizer that keeps your meaning. Essai's humanizer is designed to make phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written, and to help it pass popular AI detectors.
  • Nothing to sign up for. The humanizer's free tier handles up to 125 words per request with no signup and no credit card.

Best GPTZero alternatives

  • Essai: best overall. Our top pick for students and writers: a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, plus an AI humanizer in the same app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month as of October 2026.
  • ZeroGPT: a free detector that accepts up to 15,000 characters per check but shows ads. Its accuracy figures are self-reported, and its Trustpilot score was 1.2 out of 5 from 111 reviews in October 2026.
  • Copyleaks: pairs AI detection with plagiarism checking but has no humanizer. Paid plans start at $16.99 a month, or $13.99 billed annually, as of October 2026, and its Trustpilot score was 2.7 out of 5 from 365 reviews.
  • Originality.ai: a checking suite for publishers and editors who review other people's copy. The free tier allows three AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words each, and paid AI checks run on credits.
  • Winston AI: AI text and image detection for educators and publishers, with plagiarism checks from its $29 Advanced plan. The free option is a 14-day trial with 2,000 credits, and paid plans start at $18 a month as of October 2026.

GPTZero review: the verdict

GPTZero is a capable detector for classrooms, but for most students and writers it falls short where it counts: tight free limits, higher prices, billing complaints and no humanizer to revise the text it flags. In our view, Essai is the best GPTZero alternative in 2026 and our top pick overall. You get a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making your writing read naturally, and paid plans from $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026. Check your draft, humanize what needs work and check it again, all in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPTZero free?

Yes, with limits. GPTZero's free plan covers 10,000 words a month, up to 10,000 characters per scan and one Advanced Scan, without downloadable reports. Paid plans raise those limits, and the Terms of Use mention a 14-day free trial that converts to a paid subscription. If you want more free detection, a free Essai account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans.

Is GPTZero accurate?

GPTZero claims 99% accuracy, but that is the company's own figure. Its help center says accuracy drops on short or heavily edited text and that procedural writing can be flagged. In a July 2026 Epoch AI study, it missed 32 of 297 AI passages written to imitate a real author. Treat any GPTZero score as a signal to look closer, not as proof.

How much does GPTZero cost?

As of October 2026, GPTZero Premium costs $23.99 a month or $155.88 a year, and Professional costs $45.99 a month or $299.88 a year, in US dollars. Annual billing works out to $12.99 and $24.99 a month. Prices are localized, so you may see another currency. For comparison, Essai's Basic plan costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly.

Does GPTZero have an AI humanizer?

No. GPTZero detects AI-like writing and explains the patterns it finds, but it does not offer a humanizer to rework the text. Essai pairs both tools in one web app: the AI humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and the free AI detector lets you check the result before you submit or publish.

Does GPTZero store the text I scan?

Yes, for dashboard scans. GPTZero says it keeps a copy of text submitted through its dashboard and uses that data in aggregate to improve the service, without disclosing it to third parties. It says documents sent through its API are not stored. Writing Replay recordings from signed-out sessions are deleted after 30 days, and you can delete your own replays at any time.

What is the best GPTZero alternative?

Essai is our top pick. Its free AI detector gives an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and a free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans. Unlike GPTZero, Essai also includes an AI humanizer, free for up to 125 words per request with no signup. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026.
