Originality.ai Review (2026): Pricing, Accuracy and Best Alternative
By Essai Team · Updated · 15 min read
On this page
Originality.ai is a credit-based AI detector and plagiarism checker for publishers, agencies and editors. The catch, as this Originality.ai review shows: just three free scans a day, subscription credits that lapse every month and false positives the company itself warns about. Our top pick is Essai, which pairs a free AI detector with an AI humanizer in one app.
This review walks through Originality.ai's plans and credit rules as of October 2026, what the company and outside researchers report about its accuracy, what its users complain about, and how it stacks up against Essai. If you want to check a draft right away, Essai's free AI detector gives you an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and the AI humanizer is designed to rework flagged passages so they read naturally while keeping your meaning.

| Our pick instead | Essai: a free AI detector plus an AI humanizer in one web app |
Pros and cons
Pros
- Several checks in one dashboard. AI detection, plagiarism, readability, grammar and a content quality score live in one app, and Bulk Scan runs them across spreadsheets, URLs or sitemaps.
- Adjustable strictness. The AI Allowance setting lets you choose how much AI help is acceptable, from 0 to 40 percent, before a document is labeled Likely AI.
- Responsive support. Recent Trustpilot reviews repeatedly praise fast, helpful support staff.
Cons
- No humanizer to fix what it flags. The help center says Originality.ai does not offer an AI humanizer. A free web tool with that name is listed among its free tools, but the company says its output stays detectable by Originality.ai's own checker, and Deep Scan only suggests edits you make by hand.
- A limited free tier. You get three AI-only scans a day and no free trial, and text pasted into the free checker may be used to train its models.
- Credits that expire. Pro credits lapse at the end of each billing month, running AI and plagiarism checks together doubles the cost, and changing the AI Allowance setting means paying for a fresh scan.
- False positives on record. In a July 2026 Epoch AI study, Originality.ai's then-current Turbo model flagged 19 of 495 human-written passages as AI, while GPTZero and Pangram flagged none.
- AI-assisted editing raises scores. The help center says Grammarly, Quillbot, ChatGPT or Microsoft Word Editor can push the AI score up even when you wrote the text yourself.
- Discretionary refunds. Refund requests are reviewed case by case, and an approved refund cancels the credits left in your account.
- Disruptive model changes. Originality.ai retired its Lite, Turbo and Academic models in September 2026, and some long-time users on Trustpilot say the switch made the tool unusable for them.
Key features
Originality.ai is built for checking other people's copy at volume. Here is what the main tools do and where their limits sit.
AI checker with AI Allowance
Paste text, upload a Word or PDF file, or scan a URL. With AI Allowance, you pick a tolerance of 0, 5, 15, 25 or 40 percent, and the verdict reads Likely AI or Likely Original depending on whether the AI share appears to sit above or below that line. Originality.ai recommends 15 percent, and the company says a separate Multi-Language model covers 30 languages.
The limits: website scans need at least 100 words, every rescan at a new setting costs fresh credits, and the confidence figure is easy to misread. A Likely Original result at 60 percent confidence does not mean 40 percent of the text is AI, as the company's score guide explains.
Deep Scan
Deep Scan, launched in December 2025, runs after a Likely AI result. It highlights the passages behind the score and suggests edits with examples, then leaves the rewriting to you. It works in English only and costs 5 credits per 100 words on top of the original scan. Essai takes the opposite approach: its humanizer is designed to rework the phrasing for you while keeping your meaning, and the detector checks the result in the same app.
Plagiarism and writing checks
The plagiarism checker looks for copied, paraphrased and patchwork text. In the web app it searches public web pages through Google, while academic databases and private repositories come through LMS and institutional integrations. Originality.ai's own study claims up to 99.5 percent accuracy on copied text, but the same page lists 41 percent for paraphrased and 67.5 percent for patchwork plagiarism.
Smaller tools cover readability, grammar and spelling, a content quality score rated Low, Good or High, and a guideline checker that scores text against your own style guide or against presets inspired by AP, APA, Chicago and Canadian Press style.
Extensions, integrations and API
The browser extension works in Chrome, Edge and Google Docs, with a Firefox version, and replays how a document was typed. Schools can add a Moodle plugin or a Google Classroom view. The API is reserved for the Enterprise plan at $179 a month as of October 2026, and an MCP connector runs scans from inside ChatGPT or Claude on Pro and Enterprise.
Privacy and scan history
Scan history lasts 30 days on Pro and pay-as-you-go accounts and 365 days on Enterprise. Unless you opt out in your settings, the privacy policy lets Originality.ai use your scans to train its models, and text pasted into the free detector may be used for training too. A shared scan link opens for anyone who holds it.
Originality.ai pricing (as of October 2026)
Originality.ai bills in credits. These are the options on its pricing page as of October 2026, in US dollars:
| Plan | Price | Credits | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, no account needed | 3 AI scans a day | Up to 2,000 words per scan; AI detection only |
| Pay as you go | $30 one time | 3,000 | Credits last 2 years; 30-day scan history |
| Pro | $14.95 a month, or $12.95 a month billed yearly ($155.40) | 2,000 a month | Credits expire monthly; no API; extra seats $9.95 a month |
| Enterprise | $179 a month, or $136.58 a month billed yearly ($1,638.96) | 15,000 a month | API, priority support, 365-day scan history |
Pay as you go has no plan card on the page, so confirm its price at checkout. The credit rules matter more than the sticker price:
- One credit covers 100 words per check. Ticking both AI and plagiarism halves that to 50 words, so a 1,000-word article costs 20 credits instead of 10, and 1,001 words costs 21.
- Pro buys a fixed monthly allowance. Its 2,000 credits cover roughly 200,000 words of AI-only scanning, or about 100,000 words with plagiarism checks added.
- Subscription credits expire. They are used first and lapse when the billing month ends. Credits bought separately last two years.
- Rescans and Deep Scan cost extra. Moving the AI Allowance slider and scanning again uses new credits, and Deep Scan costs 5 credits per 100 words.
- Watch the top-ups. The cancellation guide tells you to untick Credit Topup if you do not want a charge when your balance runs low.
- Refunds are discretionary. Under the refund policy, requests are reviewed case by case, and an approved refund cancels the credits left in the account.
Essai comes out ahead on yearly billing: its yearly plans save about 30 percent, against up to 23 percent for Originality.ai, which puts Essai Basic at $9.99 a month versus $12.95 for Originality.ai Pro as of October 2026. Every paid Essai plan also includes unlimited AI detection, and a free account adds unlimited detector scans and detailed reports, so you never count credits to recheck a draft; see all plans on the Essai pricing page.
Is Originality.ai accurate?
Originality.ai is good at catching plainly generated AI text, but its record is weaker where writers feel it most: human text flagged as AI, AI text written to imitate a specific author, and short passages. Its headline figures come from its own benchmark, and none of the outside studies below tested the current AI Allowance setting.
What Originality.ai claims
Originality.ai's accuracy study, updated September 21, 2026, reports 99.4 percent accuracy and 98.5 percent precision for AI Allowance at the 15 percent setting, measured on a 456,872-sample slice of its own Benchmark V6. At the strict 5 percent setting, precision falls to 91.1 percent, which means a larger share of its AI flags land on text labeled human. These are vendor-run tests on vendor-built data.
The company also concedes the limits. Its accuracy page says AI scores alone should not be used for academic discipline, because even a low false-positive rate is too high for that, and its terms call detection results probabilistic estimates rather than conclusive proof.
What outside research found
- Epoch AI (July 2026). Epoch AI tested Originality.ai's Turbo 3.0.2 model as it stood in June 2026. It flagged 19 of 495 human passages as AI, 16 of them fiction and all of them written before ChatGPT, while Pangram and GPTZero flagged none. It caught 296 of 297 AI passages from simple prompts but missed 53 of 297 written to imitate a specific author.
- Jabarian and Imas (NBER working paper, September 2025). According to Chicago Booth Review's summary, Originality.ai missed more AI text than Pangram or GPTZero, between 10 and 40 percent depending on the model, and all three detectors lost accuracy on passages under 50 words. The working paper's abstract says Pangram was the only tool to meet a strict cap of 0.5 percent false positives without sacrificing accuracy.
- RAID benchmark (Dugan et al., ACL 2024). The researchers queried Originality.ai's API in January 2024. The paper shows that one threshold tuned to a 5 percent false-positive rate across all domains left it flagging 13 percent of human Wikipedia text, which is why the authors set thresholds per domain.
- Liang et al. (2023, Patterns). This study included Originality.ai among seven detectors that together averaged a 61.22 percent false-positive rate on 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers. It tested a March 2023 version, but the explanation still holds: plainer, more predictable phrasing looks machine-like to many detectors.
Why Originality.ai flags human writing
Originality.ai's help center lists the usual triggers:
- AI-powered editing or planning, including Grammarly, Quillbot, ChatGPT and Microsoft Word Editor
- Short samples (the website needs 100 words, and more is better)
- Formulaic sections such as introductions, conclusions, recipes and works-cited pages
- Public domain works and academic writing
Small error rates add up fast. When Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI indicator in 2023, it noted that a 1 percent false-positive rate could have mislabeled around 750 of the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022.
If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives covers the next steps, and teachers can follow a fair process for checking student essays. If you use AI tools for coursework or client work, check the policy that applies before you submit.
Essai's AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, works best on 150 words or more, and lets you rescan as often as you need with a free account. In Essai's internal testing, our detector outperformed other AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.
What users say
On Trustpilot, Originality.ai holds a 4.6 TrustScore from 1,358 reviews as of mid-October 2026, and much of the praise goes to its support staff. The one-star reviews, about 11 percent of the total, tell a different story:
- Human writing flagged as AI. Most recent one-star reviews describe the reviewer's own writing being flagged, several of them at 100 percent.
- Fallout from the September 2026 update. Some long-time users say retiring the older models left the tool unusable for their needs, and one reviewer says a refund for unused credits was refused.
- Cancellation friction. A few reviewers say stopping a subscription was confusing or meant contacting support.
The Chrome Web Store listing shows 4.2 out of 5 from 160 ratings. Ratings are self-selected, so read them as a picture of user experience rather than a measure of accuracy.
What Essai users say
Here is what Essai users say about the humanizer:
"I've tested many alternatives, but nothing comes close to the quality Essai provides." (Priya Sharma, Essai user)
"The quality of the humanized text is remarkable. Essai preserves my ideas while making everything sound natural. My grades have improved significantly since I started using it." (Michael Foster, Essai user)
"Essai has revolutionized my business management studies. The text humanizer has significantly improved my reports and presentations. This all-in-one solution is a student's dream!" (David Williams, Essai user)

Why Essai is the better Originality.ai alternative
- It rewrites, not just reports. Originality.ai's Deep Scan points at the passages behind a Likely AI score and leaves the edits to you. Essai's humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and to help your text pass popular AI detectors.
- Detect and revise in one place. Humanize a draft, check it with the detector and adjust it again without switching tools.
- Free checks without a daily cap. A free Essai account adds unlimited scans and detailed reports, while Originality.ai's free checker stops at three scans a day.
- No credit math. Every paid Essai plan includes unlimited AI detection, so a rescan after an edit never costs extra credits.
- A lower yearly price. Essai Basic costs $9.99 a month billed yearly, against $12.95 for Originality.ai Pro, as of October 2026.
- Start with no signup. The humanizer's free tier handles up to 125 words per request with no signup and no credit card.
Best Originality.ai alternatives
- Essai: best overall. Our top pick for writers, students and content teams: a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, plus an AI humanizer in the same app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
- GPTZero: a classroom-focused detector with a free plan of 10,000 words a month, but no humanizer. Premium costs $23.99 a month as of October 2026, and its Trustpilot score was 2.1 out of 5 from 145 reviews.
- Copyleaks: pairs AI detection with plagiarism checking but has no humanizer, and each started block of 250 words costs a full credit. Paid plans start at $16.99 a month, or $13.99 billed annually, as of October 2026, and its Trustpilot score was 2.7 out of 5 from 365 reviews.
- Winston AI: AI text and image detection for educators and publishers, with plagiarism checks from its $29 Advanced plan. The free option is a 14-day trial with 2,000 credits, and paid plans start at $18 a month as of October 2026.

Originality.ai review: the verdict
Originality.ai is a capable checking suite for publishers who screen other people's copy, but for most writers it falls short where it counts: three free scans a day, subscription credits that lapse monthly, false positives the company itself warns about, and no AI humanizer of its own, according to its help center. In our view, Essai is the best Originality.ai alternative in 2026 and our top pick overall. You get a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making your writing read naturally, and paid plans from $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026. Create a free account, humanize your draft and check it again, all in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is Originality.ai free?
Only in a limited way. Its free AI checker allows three scans a day of up to 2,000 words each with no account needed, but it covers AI detection only and there is no free trial. Text pasted into it may be used for model training. As of October 2026, Pro costs $14.95 a month, or $12.95 a month billed yearly. A free Essai account, by contrast, adds unlimited detector scans and detailed reports.
Is Originality.ai accurate?
It catches plainly generated AI text well, but the wider record is mixed. The company reports 99.4 percent accuracy at its recommended 15 percent AI Allowance, measured on its own benchmark. In a July 2026 Epoch AI study, its then-current Turbo model flagged 19 of 495 human passages as AI while GPTZero and Pangram flagged none, and a 2025 working paper found it missed more AI text than both. Treat any score as a signal, not proof.
How do Originality.ai credits work?
One credit covers 100 words for a single check, either AI detection or plagiarism. Running both together halves that to 50 words per credit, so a 1,000-word article costs 20 credits. Pro includes 2,000 credits a month that expire when each billing month ends, rescanning with a different AI Allowance uses new credits, and Deep Scan costs 5 credits per 100 words. Every paid Essai plan includes unlimited AI detection instead.
Why does Originality.ai flag my human writing as AI?
Its help center names the usual triggers: editing or planning with AI-powered tools such as Grammarly, Quillbot, ChatGPT or Microsoft Word Editor, very short samples, formulaic sections like introductions and conclusions, public domain texts and academic writing. Scan the full document rather than one paragraph, keep your drafts and version history, and check your school's or client's AI policy before relying on any score.
Does Originality.ai have an AI humanizer?
No, according to its help center. A free web tool called AI Humanizer is listed among its free tools, but that page says the output stays detectable by Originality.ai's own checker, and the Deep Scan feature only suggests edits you make yourself. Essai pairs an AI humanizer, free for up to 125 words per request with no signup, with a free AI detector in one web app.
What is the best Originality.ai alternative?
Essai is our top pick. Its free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and a free account adds unlimited scans and detailed reports with no daily cap. Unlike Originality.ai, Essai also includes an AI humanizer, free for up to 125 words per request with no signup. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
