Paperpal AI Detector is the AI-writing check inside Paperpal, an academic writing assistant from Cactus Communications. The catch, as this Paperpal AI detector review shows: the free tier is only a preview, Prime caps detection at 25,000 words a month, and there is no AI humanizer. Our top pick is Essai: a free AI detector plus an AI humanizer.

Paperpal aims the detector at essays, theses, dissertations and journal manuscripts. Below you'll find what the free check covers, Prime and Pro pricing as of October 2026, what Paperpal and published research say about accuracy, what users report, and how it stacks up against Essai. Want to check a draft right now? Essai's free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and the AI humanizer is designed to make flagged passages read naturally while keeping your meaning.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built around academic text. Paperpal says the detector was built on more than 100,000 human and AI scholarly samples from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
  • More than one number. Results pair a document score with sentence highlights and bands for clearly human, blended and clearly AI passages.
  • Checks in one workspace. Paid plans bundle detection with grammar, plagiarism and reference checks, and Document Health Checks run several of them in one pass.

Cons

  • No AI humanizer. Paperpal can tell you a draft reads as AI-written, but it offers only an AI paraphraser, and a Paperpal post rates AI-expanded text as a medium-to-high detection risk.
  • The free tier is a preview. Free checks stop at 1,200 words, Paperpal's comparison table lists five free scans a day, and full sentence-level scans and larger documents are reserved for Prime and Pro.
  • Prime caps detection. Prime includes 25,000 words of AI detection a month; only Pro, at $59 a month as of October 2026, is unlimited.
  • Conflicting limits. The Prime plan card says 25,000 words a month, the feature table lower on the same pricing page says unlimited, and December 2025 posts described unlimited Prime scans of up to 10,000 words each.
  • Unverified accuracy claims. Paperpal advertises 99 percent accuracy and a cut of more than 40 percent in false positives, but it publishes no test set, method or false-positive rate.
  • English first. Paperpal says its detector is optimized for English and may not be reliable on multilingual or translated text.
  • Mixed ratings for the Word add-in. Paperpal for Word averaged 3.1 out of 5 from 45 ratings on Microsoft Marketplace on October 16, 2026.

Key features

Paperpal's detector gives you more than a single score, but much of the detail sits behind a paid plan. Here is what you get and where the limits are.

Scores, sentence highlights and three bands

Paperpal's changelog entry for December 1, 2025 describes a document-level AI score, sentence highlights, and writing patterns grouped as AI-written, human-AI blend (high, medium or low impact) or human-written. On the public page, results use five labels, from "predominantly human" through "mixed" to "predominantly AI." Paperpal's launch post says the model weighs signals such as predictability and variation, keeps your formatting and offers an interactive side-by-side view of the passages to revisit. The limit: full sentence-level scans are reserved for Prime and Pro.

Text limits and uploads

The public detector needs at least 80 words of pasted text or a .docx file of up to 25 MB, and the free check handles up to 1,200 words. The page mentions no other file formats. Your first check appears to work without an account, but the result screen asks you to sign up for the complete report, and a second scan brings up a sign-up prompt.

Reports, history and Document Health Checks

Reports land in a Previous Checks list in the web app and Word add-in, and a March 2026 update lets you download or delete them. Paperpal's changelog adds that deleting a report also deletes the submitted document. Document Health Checks now run plagiarism, AI detection and grammar checks in one pass. Paperpal introduced the dashboard in November 2025 and brought the combined checks to mobile in April 2026.

AI Footprint and disclosure templates

The AI Footprint toggle, added in August 2025 and off by default, marks text that Paperpal's own AI helped write. AI Disclosure Templates, added in September 2025, draft AI-use statements for coursework and journal submissions. Neither one detects AI.

Where it runs

The detector works on the public page, in Paperpal's web editor and in its Word add-in. The Chrome extension and Google Docs add-on listings focus on grammar, paraphrasing and writing help and don't mention AI detection.

Privacy and data use

Paperpal's data security page says documents, uploads and personal information are never used for model training on any plan, and that uploaded files can be deleted whenever you want. The detector page says Paperpal doesn't store your drafts, yet reports stay in your history until you delete them.

Paperpal AI Detector pricing (as of October 2026)

The detector isn't sold on its own. Free users get a preview, and paid users get a monthly allowance inside Prime or Pro. These are the prices Paperpal's pricing page showed US visitors in October 2026; Paperpal bills in local currencies, so buyers elsewhere see different prices.

PlanMonthly (as of October 2026)Yearly (as of October 2026)AI detectionOther checks included
Free$0$0Score preview, up to 1,200 words per check200 grammar edits a month and a lite plagiarism report
Prime$25$144 (about $12/month)25,000 words a month10,000 words a month each of plagiarism and reference checks
Pro$59$348 (about $29/month)UnlimitedUnlimited grammar edits; 30,000 words a month each of plagiarism and reference checks
Prime multi-yearNot offered$229 for 2 years or $289 for 3 years, paid onceSame as PrimeSame as Prime, with no auto-renewal

A few rules to know before you pay:

  • Allowances reset monthly. The CACTUS terms of use say Prime and Pro word limits reset on the first day of each calendar month, and unused words don't carry over.
  • Extra words cost extra. The terms describe one-time word add-ons that last 30 days, vary in price by market and can't be refunded. The pricing page doesn't list their prices.
  • Plans renew automatically. Monthly and yearly plans auto-renew, and only a first subscription purchase qualifies for a refund: within 7 days on monthly plans, or 30 days on annual and multi-year plans.
  • Limits can change. The terms let Paperpal change usage limits for new purchases, and Prime's detection allowance has already shifted since December 2025.

How Essai compares: as of October 2026, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, and includes unlimited AI detection, while Paperpal keeps unlimited detection for Pro at $59 a month. A free Essai account also adds detailed reports and unlimited scans. Full plan details are on the Essai pricing page.

Is Paperpal AI Detector accurate?

Paperpal makes strong accuracy claims but doesn't publish the evidence behind them, and published research on AI detectors gives good reason to read any single score with care.

What Paperpal claims

  • Training and false positives. The detector page says the model was built on more than 100,000 human and AI scholarly samples and that its multi-model checks reduce false positives by more than 40 percent. It doesn't say compared with what, or on which texts.
  • Headline accuracy. The page's FAQ says Paperpal identifies text from Gemini, Claude and ChatGPT with 99 percent accuracy, then concedes that no AI detector can guarantee complete accuracy.
  • Newer figures. A June 2026 Paperpal blog post adds a figure of 95 percent sensitivity to human edits and says the model is retrained every 90 days.
  • Paperpal's own caution. A 2024 help article says AI detectors "should be used as a reference, not an accurate assessment," and recalls a detector that labeled the US Constitution as AI-generated.

None of these pages names a test set, a testing date or a false-positive rate. In their 2023 paper, Liang and colleagues called it "misleading at best" to accept detector claims of 99 percent accuracy when no public test dataset or training details are available.

What published research says

  • Bias against non-native writers. A Stanford study in Patterns (Liang et al., 2023) ran seven widely used detectors on 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers and 88 US eighth-grade essays. The detectors handled the US essays well but labeled more than half of the TOEFL essays as AI-generated, an average false-positive rate of 61.3 percent, and at least one detector flagged 97.8 percent of them.
  • A broad academic test. Weber-Wulff et al., published in December 2023, evaluated 14 tools, including Turnitin, and concluded they "are neither accurate nor reliable." Every tool scored below 80 percent accuracy, only five passed 70 percent, and the risk of false accusations rose sharply for machine-translated text.
  • OpenAI pulled its own classifier. OpenAI withdrew its AI text classifier on July 20, 2023, "due to its low rate of accuracy." On its challenge set, the classifier caught 26 percent of AI-written text and labeled human writing as AI 9 percent of the time (archived OpenAI post).
  • Big vendors admit errors. Turnitin aims for a false-positive rate under 1 percent and says its rate "is not zero." Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023, noting that at 1 percent, around 750 of the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have been wrongly labeled.

These studies predate Paperpal's detector, so they don't measure it, but they show why a single score is never proof.

Why Paperpal flags human writing

Paperpal's own posts explain the pattern. Its January 2026 post says detectors lean on perplexity, meaning how predictable the wording is, and burstiness, meaning how much sentence length varies. AI polishing makes text "more polished, consistent, and predictable," the post says, and it rates a light "Improve Fluency" edit as a low-to-medium detection risk and AI-expanded text as medium-to-high. In other words, leaning on Paperpal's own writing tools can push your score up.

Formal academic prose carries its own risk. Replying to a Trustpilot reviewer in February 2026, Paperpal wrote that smooth, coherent writing is "more likely to give off AI-like signals" and that academic text tends to score higher, a pattern it says "is seen across tools." Paperpal's help center also notes that detectors are known to wrongly flag writing by non-native English speakers. Short samples are harder still: OpenAI said its classifier was very unreliable below 1,000 characters, while Paperpal's public check accepts as few as 80 words.

If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives walks through next steps, reviewers can learn how to detect AI writing without false positives, and teachers can follow a fair process for checking student essays. If you use AI tools for coursework, check your course policy first.

Essai's AI detector gives you a clear AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, works best on 150 words or more, and lets you rescan as often as you need with a free account, so you can check every revision instead of rationing a 1,200-word preview. In Essai's internal testing, our detector outperformed other popular AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.

What users say

Public ratings cover Paperpal as a whole, not the detector alone, and they vary by platform. As of October 16, 2026:

  • Trustpilot: a 4.7 TrustScore from 516 reviews. Trustpilot notes that Paperpal invites customers to review, and most recent reviews carry an "Invited" label.
  • Microsoft Marketplace: Paperpal for Word averaged 3.1 out of 5 from 45 ratings.
  • Chrome Web Store: the extension showed 4.2 out of 5 from 28 ratings.
  • Google Workspace Marketplace: the Google Docs add-on averaged 4.72 out of 5 from 57 ratings.

The critical Trustpilot reviews that mention the detector describe specific problems. In February 2026, one reviewer said short, simple sentences and published papers came back largely or entirely AI. In April, a non-native English writer said running Trim or Paraphrase raised the AI percentage. In May, another said the detector sometimes took a long time or returned no result. A few reviews raise billing or renewal problems; experiences with support vary, and a March 2026 reviewer called customer service very bad.

What Essai users say

Essai users describe the humanizer in their own words:

"I've tested many alternatives, but nothing comes close to the quality Essai provides." (Priya Sharma, Essai user)
"The quality of the humanized text is remarkable. Essai preserves my ideas while making everything sound natural. My grades have improved significantly since I started using it." (Michael Foster, Essai user)
"Essai has revolutionized my business management studies. The text humanizer has significantly improved my reports and presentations. This all-in-one solution is a student's dream!" (David Williams, Essai user)

Paperpal AI Detector vs Essai

Paperpal's detector is one check inside a writing suite that offers a paraphraser but no AI humanizer. Essai covers both halves of the job: an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and a free AI detector to check the result. Prices are as of October 2026.

Why Essai is the better Paperpal AI Detector alternative

  • Detect and revise in one place. Paperpal flags text but has no humanizer. Essai's humanizer and detector live in the same web app, so you can humanize a draft and check it in one workflow.
  • More free detection. A free Essai account gives you unlimited scans and detailed reports, while Paperpal's free check is a preview capped at 1,200 words, with five scans a day per its comparison table.
  • Unlimited detection from the first paid plan. Every Essai paid plan includes unlimited AI detection. Paperpal limits Prime to 25,000 words a month and keeps unlimited checks for Pro at $59 a month (as of October 2026).
  • Lower prices. As of October 2026, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, against $25 a month or $144 a year for Paperpal Prime.
  • A humanizer built to keep your meaning. Essai's humanizer is designed to make phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written, and to help it pass popular AI detectors.
  • Nothing to sign up for. The humanizer's free tier handles up to 125 words per request with no signup and no credit card.

Best Paperpal AI Detector alternatives

  • Essai: best overall. Our top pick for students and writers: a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, plus an AI humanizer in the same app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026.
  • GPTZero: a classroom-focused detector whose Professional plan connects to Canvas and Google Classroom. The free plan stops at 10,000 words a month, there is no humanizer, and its Trustpilot score was 2.1 out of 5 from 145 reviews in October 2026.
  • Copyleaks: AI detection plus plagiarism checking, with no-login scans of up to 25,000 characters. Paid usage runs on credits, there is no humanizer, and plans start at $16.99 a month, or $13.99 billed annually, as of October 2026.
  • Grammarly AI Detector: a free web checker from a large writing suite, but detection inside Grammarly's apps needs a paid plan, from $12 per member a month billed annually or $30 billed monthly, as of October 2026.
  • Proofademic: an academic-focused detector with sentence-level confidence scores. Its home page offers a one-time 1,000 free words, and all purchases are final.

Paperpal AI detector review: the verdict

Paperpal's AI Detector adds a useful check to an academic writing suite, but as a detector it falls short where it counts: the free tier is a preview, Prime caps detection at 25,000 words a month, the 99 percent accuracy claim comes without published evidence, and there is no humanizer to fix what it flags. In our view, Essai is the best Paperpal AI Detector alternative in 2026 and our top pick overall. You get a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making your writing read naturally, and paid plans from $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026. Check your draft, humanize what needs work and check it again, all in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Paperpal AI detector free?

Only partly. As of October 2026, Paperpal's public AI detector gives a free score preview of up to 1,200 words per check, and its comparison table lists five free scans a day. You need at least 80 words or a .docx file of up to 25 MB. Full sentence-level scans need Prime, with 25,000 words of detection a month, or Pro, which is unlimited. A free Essai account adds unlimited scans and detailed reports.

Is Paperpal AI detector accurate?

Paperpal claims 99 percent accuracy on text from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini and says its multi-model checks cut false positives by more than 40 percent, but it publishes no test set or false-positive rate. Published studies of other detectors found frequent errors, especially on non-native English writing. Paperpal's own help center says detectors should be used as a reference, not an accurate assessment, so treat any score as a signal, not proof.

How much does Paperpal Prime cost?

As of October 2026, Paperpal's pricing page shows US visitors Prime at $25 a month or $144 a year, and Pro at $59 a month or $348 a year. Prime is also sold as a one-time plan at $229 for two years or $289 for three. Prime includes 25,000 words of AI detection a month, while Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, with unlimited AI detection.

Why does Paperpal flag my own writing as AI?

Detectors judge patterns such as predictability and sentence variety, not who had the ideas. Paperpal says smooth, formal academic prose tends to score higher across tools, and that heavier AI rewriting, such as expanding text, raises detection risk more than light fluency edits. Research has also found that detectors misclassify non-native English writing far more often. A flag is a reason to review your draft, not proof of misconduct.

Does Paperpal have an AI humanizer?

No. Paperpal offers an AI paraphraser with 10+ modes but no humanizer, and its own January 2026 post rates AI-expanded text as a medium-to-high detection risk, so heavy use of its writing tools can push AI scores up. Essai pairs a free AI detector with an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, with a free tier of 125 words per request.

Does Paperpal store the text I check for AI?

Paperpal says it never uses documents, uploads or personal data to train its models, on any plan. Its detector page says drafts are not stored, yet reports appear in a Previous Checks history, and Paperpal's changelog says deleting a report also removes the submitted document. Its data-security page says uploaded files can be deleted at any time, so clear old reports if that matters to you.

What is the best Paperpal AI Detector alternative?

Essai is our top pick. Its free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and a free account adds unlimited scans and detailed reports instead of a 1,200-word preview. An AI humanizer sits in the same app, so you can revise flagged passages and check them again. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, with unlimited AI detection, as of October 2026.
