Sapling AI Detector is a free tool from Sapling Intelligence, a Y Combinator-backed maker of AI writing tools, that estimates how likely a text is AI-generated and scores each sentence. The catch, as this Sapling AI Detector review shows: free checks score only the first 2,000 characters, and Sapling lists no AI humanizer. Our top pick is Essai.
Sapling pitches its detector to educators, SEO practitioners and people who review user-generated content, and its strongest features sit on Pro, the API and enterprise plans. Students checking a full essay hit the free limit fast. Essai pairs a free AI detector with an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning while making your writing read naturally, so you can check and revise a draft in one place.
This review covers Sapling's features, plans and prices as of October 2026, what the company and published research say about its accuracy, what users report, and how it stacks up against Essai.
Sapling AI Detector at a glance
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| What it is | A free AI detector with overall and sentence-level scores, part of Sapling's writing and developer platform |
| Company | Sapling Intelligence, Inc., a Y Combinator company (Winter 2019 batch) |
| Main features | AI-generation score, sentence scores, PDF and DOCX upload, Chrome extension, API |
| Free plan | Scores only the first 2,000 characters of each check |
| Paid plans from | Pro at $25 a month, or $12 a month billed annually (as of October 2026) |
| AI humanizer | Not listed |
| Best for | Teams, publishers and developers who screen text at volume or through an API |
| Our pick instead | Essai: a free AI detector plus an AI humanizer in one web app |
Pros and cons
Pros
- Sentence-level detail. Even free checks show an overall score plus sentence scores and highlights.
- Long checks on Pro. Pro scores up to 100,000 characters per check and accepts PDF and Word files in batches of 10.
- Developer tooling. A REST API, Python and JavaScript SDKs and model version pinning suit teams that build detection into their own software.
Cons
- No AI humanizer. Sapling can tell you a passage looks AI-written, but it lists no humanizer to rework it, so the fix is on you.
- A short free limit. Free checks score only the first 2,000 characters, roughly 400 to 500 tokens by Sapling's own estimate, so a typical essay is only partly checked.
- Pricier than Essai. As of October 2026, Pro costs $25 a month on monthly billing, against $14.99 for Essai Basic, and $12 a month billed annually, against $9.99 for Essai.
- Paid extension detection. The Chrome extension's store listing says AI detection becomes a premium feature after the first month.
- Admitted errors, no headline accuracy figure. Sapling says false positives and false negatives will occur, and its detailed evaluation sits in a whitepaper you have to request.
- Your text is stored. Sapling's privacy policy says submitted content is stored and used to improve the service.
- No refunds. Sapling's terms say fees are non-refundable and are not prorated if a subscription ends early.
Key features
Sapling covers the detection basics well, but several of the most useful pieces depend on a paid plan or an API key. Here is what you get and where the limits are.
AI-generation score and sentence scores
Paste text, and Sapling returns an overall AI-generation score plus a sentence-by-sentence view from the same model. Sapling's evaluation guide notes that the score is an estimate of how likely the text is AI-generated, not the share of words an AI wrote.
The two views can disagree. Because the overall score reads the whole text at once, a partly AI-written document can get a low overall score while a few sentences score high. Sapling says results become much more reliable once a text passes about 50 words, which makes the 2,000-character free cap the real constraint for longer work.
File uploads and share links
You can upload PDF and DOCX files, up to 5 per batch on Free and 10 on Pro. Sapling pulls the text out of the file before scoring it, so files need selectable text, and scanned pages have to go through OCR first. Any result can be shared by link, but shared reports expire after 3 days.
Chrome extension
The AI Content Detector extension adds a Detect AI button next to responses on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, and a right-click option on other sites. Its Chrome Web Store listing says the first month is a free trial, after which AI detection is a premium feature.
Languages
As of October 2026, the detector covers English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Japanese, and it picks the language automatically. Sapling says Italian and Dutch support is newer and catches somewhat less AI text, and anything outside those eight languages runs through the English model, which Sapling itself calls less reliable.
API and developer tools
The AI Detector API returns a document score from 0 to 1, sentence scores and token-level probabilities, takes up to 200,000 characters per request and is billed separately from Pro. New API keys come with a free evaluation quota of 50,000 characters a day and 250,000 a month. Sapling also publishes SDKs and an MCP server for AI assistants, and both need an API key. This is the part of Sapling built for developers, not for students checking their own drafts.
Sapling AI Detector pricing (as of October 2026)
Sapling sells detection inside its general plans, so Pro also covers its writing assistant. The figures below come from Sapling's pricing page and its API rate card.
| Plan | Price (as of October 2026) | AI detector limit | Also includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| API | Usage-based, from $0.005 per 1,000 characters | Up to 200,000 characters per request | Billed separately from Pro, one-time $5 minimum |
| Enterprise | Starts at 10 seats, $15/seat/month | 100,000 characters per check | SSO and SCIM, team analytics, self-hosting, dedicated support |
Read the billing rules before you pay:
- Free trial. New individual accounts get a one-month Pro trial without a credit card, and it ends on its own if you never add a payment method.
- API rates. Detection costs $0.005 per 1,000 characters for the first 10 million characters in a month, with lower rates at higher volume. New API subscriptions pay a one-time $5 minimum that is credited toward usage.
- Long texts. Anything over 100,000 characters has to be split up or sent through the API.
- Refunds. The terms say fees are non-refundable and not prorated, so cancel before your renewal date.
Essai costs less at both entry points. As of October 2026, Essai Basic is $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, and every paid plan includes unlimited AI detection on top of the humanizer. You can also start free: the humanizer handles up to 125 words per request with no signup, and a free Essai account adds unlimited detector scans and detailed reports. All plans are on the Essai pricing page.
Is Sapling AI Detector accurate?
Sapling does not put a single accuracy number on its detector, and it is direct about errors: false positives and false negatives will occur, and no detector, its own included, should be the only check. A Sapling score is a reason to look closer, not proof.
What Sapling claims
- Accuracy depends on the dataset, the text length and the decision threshold, so Sapling asks users to measure false positives and misses on samples from their own work.
- False positives are more likely when a text is short, generic and essay-like, according to Sapling's FAQ. That matters if you mainly check essays.
- Sapling's API documentation warns that small edits can stop AI text from being flagged, and that rote human writing can be misclassified.
- For its September 17, 2026 default-model update, Sapling's API documentation reports that false positives on human text fell by 60% on its internal modern-text set and that detection of humanized AI text improved by 3.9 percentage points. Both figures come from Sapling's own held-out data.
- Detailed results on a 1,000-sample held-out set sit in an 11-page whitepaper that Sapling shares on request.
What independent research shows
Sapling was one of seven detectors in a Stanford study by Liang et al., published in Patterns in 2023. Across the seven tools, more than half of 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers were labeled AI-generated, an average false positive rate of 61.3%, while essays by US eighth graders were classified almost perfectly. All seven detectors flagged 19.8% of the TOEFL essays, and at least one flagged 97.8%. These are group figures for early-2023 versions of the tools, but they show how easily detectors of this kind misjudge non-native writers.
The wider record points the same way. OpenAI withdrew its own AI text classifier on July 20, 2023, citing its low rate of accuracy; on OpenAI's challenge set it caught 26% of AI-written text and flagged human writing 9% of the time. Vanderbilt University turned off Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023, noting that even a 1% false positive rate could have meant around 750 of the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 being wrongly labeled.
Why false positives happen
According to Liang et al., most GPT detectors rely on perplexity, a measure of how predictable each next word is to a language model. Human writing can be predictable too, especially when it is short, follows a template or uses a limited vocabulary, and the TOEFL essays that every detector flagged had significantly lower perplexity. Sapling describes its own model as a Transformer that estimates, token by token, how likely the text is AI-generated, yet its evaluation guide still warns that formulaic human writing can be flagged and edited AI text can be missed.
If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives covers what to do next, and teachers can follow our process for checking student essays for AI fairly. If you use AI tools for coursework, read your course policy first.
Essai's AI detector gives you one clear AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent and works best on 150 words or more. In Essai's internal testing, our detector outperformed other AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.
What users say
Public feedback on Sapling's detector is thin. As of October 2026, the AI Content Detector extension on the Chrome Web Store lists about 9,000 users but only 5 ratings, averaging 4.8 out of 5, and just three short written reviews in English.
The clearest complaint comes from an October 2025 review: it says the extension misses humanized AI text, though the reviewer still finds it useful as one checker among several. Another review describes using it on college assignments. Five ratings are too few to judge a tool by, so with Sapling you are mostly relying on the company's own claims.

Why Essai is the better Sapling AI Detector alternative
- Check and fix in one place. Sapling tells you a passage looks AI-written and stops there. Essai's detector and humanizer live in the same web app, so you can humanize a draft and check it again in one workflow.
- More useful free access. A free Essai account adds unlimited detector scans and detailed reports, and the humanizer handles up to 125 words per request with no signup. Sapling's free tier scores only the first 2,000 characters of each check and includes no humanizer.
- Lower prices. As of October 2026, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, against $25 or $12 for Sapling Pro.
- Unlimited detection on every paid plan. Every Essai paid plan includes unlimited AI detection on top of the humanizer, from Basic up to Ultra.
- A humanizer that keeps your meaning. Essai's humanizer is designed to make phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written, and to help it pass popular AI detectors.
- A score you can act on. Essai returns one AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, so you can see at a glance whether a draft needs another pass.
Best Sapling AI Detector alternatives
- Essai: best overall. Our top pick for students and writers: a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, plus an AI humanizer in the same app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026.
- GPTZero: a detector built for classrooms, with a free plan of 10,000 words a month and no humanizer. Premium costs $23.99 a month, or $12.99 billed annually, as of October 2026, and its Trustpilot score was 2.1 out of 5 from 145 reviews.
- Originality.ai: a credit-based detector and plagiarism checker for publishers and editors. The free checker allows three AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words each, Pro credits expire monthly, and its help center says it does not offer a humanizer.

Sapling AI Detector review: the verdict
Sapling AI Detector is a well-documented tool for developers and teams that need an API, but it is a weak fit for students and writers checking their own work. Free checks score only the first 2,000 characters, extension detection turns paid after the first month, Pro costs more than Essai, and there is no humanizer to fix what the detector flags. In our view, Essai is the best Sapling AI Detector alternative in 2026 and our top pick overall: a free AI detector with unlimited scans on a free account, an AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning, and paid plans from $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026. Check your draft, humanize what needs work and check it again, all in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sapling AI Detector free?
Yes, with limits. As of October 2026, Sapling's free tier scores only the first 2,000 characters of each check, roughly 400 to 500 tokens by Sapling's own estimate, and accepts up to five PDF or Word files per batch. Pro raises the limit to 100,000 characters per check. If you want more from a free plan, a free Essai account adds unlimited detector scans and detailed reports, and the humanizer is free too.
Is Sapling AI Detector accurate?
Sapling publishes no single headline accuracy figure and says false positives and false negatives will occur. It reports that its September 2026 model cut false positives on human text by 60% on an internal evaluation set. In a 2023 Stanford study, early versions of seven detectors, Sapling among them, labeled more than half of essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated on average. Treat any score as a signal, not proof.
How much does Sapling AI Detector cost?
As of October 2026, Sapling Pro costs $25 a month, or $12 a month billed annually, and checks up to 100,000 characters at a time. Enterprise starts at 10 seats at $15 per seat per month, and the API is billed separately from $0.005 per 1,000 characters. Essai costs less to start: Basic is $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, with unlimited AI detection and the humanizer included.
Does Sapling AI Detector have an AI humanizer?
No. Sapling lists no AI humanizer, so its detector can flag AI-like passages but leaves the rewriting to you. Essai pairs both tools in one web app: the AI humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and the free AI detector lets you check the result before you submit or publish.
Does Sapling store the text I check?
Yes. Sapling's privacy policy says submitted content is stored and used only to improve the service, and that Sapling does not sell or rent customer data. Its terms also give Sapling a license to use what you submit to provide and improve the service and to develop new products. Keep that in mind before you paste confidential documents into the checker.
What is the best Sapling AI Detector alternative?
Essai is our top pick. Its free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and a free account adds unlimited scans and detailed reports. Unlike Sapling, Essai also includes an AI humanizer, free for up to 125 words per request with no signup, so you can revise and recheck a draft in one place. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026.
