Smodin is an AI writing suite that bundles an AI detector, an AI humanizer, a plagiarism checker, an AI writer and a chat assistant into one subscription. The short version of this Smodin review: it covers a lot for a low price, but its accuracy numbers change from page to page and every paid plan is non-refundable.

Our top pick is Essai: in our view, the best AI humanizer and detector pairing for students and writers in 2026. If you want AI-assisted drafts to read naturally and a quick way to check them before you submit, Essai combines a humanizer designed to keep your meaning with a free AI detector, and it spells out the word limits for every plan.

This review draws on Smodin's own pricing, product pages, FAQs and case studies as of October 2026, plus its Trustpilot page and published research on AI detection.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Many tools in one plan. Even Starter includes the detector, humanizer, plagiarism checker, rewriter, AI writer, chat, summarizer and translator, per Smodin's pricing page.
  • Low monthly entry price. Starter costs $12.99 a month as of October 2026.
  • Flexible detector input. You can paste text or upload .txt, .doc, .docx and .pdf files, up to 50,000 characters per check.

Cons

  • No refunds. The pricing FAQ says all subscription purchases are "non-refundable," because access starts as soon as you pay.
  • Accuracy figures that shift. Smodin's own pages cite 99.8%, 98% and 96.8% for the same detector, and none of them links to an outside audit.
  • Contradictory humanizer claims. The humanizer FAQ answers "Yes" to "Does humanizing AI text guarantee it won't be detected?", while the AI Detection Remover FAQ calls removal "about 80% consistent."
  • Vague allowances. Starter's writing output is listed only as "Limited," and the pricing page gives no monthly word counts or free allowances.
  • Mixed messages on plan features. The plan comparison marks the Chrome extension, API access and bulk processing as Premium-only, yet a home page FAQ says all plans include bulk processing and API access.
  • Inconsistent language claims. The detector page advertises 100+ languages, an FAQ answer on the same page says 12, and the extension page says more than 50.
  • Trustpilot flag. Trustpilot shows Smodin's rating as unavailable due to a breach of its guidelines and says it has removed a number of fake reviews for the company.

Key features

Smodin covers a lot of ground, but most of its tools come with caps or fine print worth knowing before you pay.

AI detector

You paste text or upload a file and run a Quick Scan. The detector asks for at least 1,000 characters and stops at 50,000 per check. Results show the likelihood of AI versus human writing, with sentence-level highlights and confidence indicators. Smodin says it recognizes output from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Llama.

Starter gets a "Standard" detector and Premium an "Advanced" one, but the pricing page never explains what changes between the two.

AI humanizer and AI Detection Remover

The AI Humanizer offers rewriting levels from light to deep and four styles: academic, creative, professional and neutral. The AI Detection Remover adds an "AI Extra" mode aimed at detectors and a "Plagiarism" mode aimed at originality, with up to 12,000 characters per run depending on plan.

The humanizer page advertises a "95%+ detection bypass rate," yet the Remover's own FAQ recommends re-checking the output. Two tools that do similar jobs, with two different stories about how well they work.

Plagiarism checker

The checker compares text against what Smodin describes as billions of web and academic sources and shows similarity scores, matched sources and highlighted passages. Paid plans allow up to 12,000 characters per check, and you can exclude specific URLs from a scan.

AI writer, chat and extras

The AI writer turns a topic of at least 100 characters into an essay, article or other draft. AI Chat adds optional web search and chat history, and a rewriter, summarizer, translator and a "Career Toolkit" with mock interviews round out the suite. On Starter, writing output is listed only as "Limited."

Chrome extension and API

The Chrome extension adds AI detection and humanizing to Google Docs, Gmail and Notion, and Smodin's API page lists rewriting, plagiarism and AI content removal APIs. The pricing table lists both under Premium, while the extension's FAQ says core features come with any account, so check what your plan actually includes.

Smodin pricing (as of October 2026)

Smodin sells two paid plans with monthly or annual billing. Prices below come from Smodin's pricing page and the pricing answers on its AI writer page.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingWhat you get
Free use$0Not applicableTry the tools without signing up; free allowances are not listed
Starter$12.99/month$10/month, billed annuallyStandard detector, humanizer, plagiarism checker, rewriter and AI writer; limited writing output; email support
Premium$19.99/month$16/month, billed annuallyAdvanced versions of those tools, premium AI models, unlimited writing output, Chrome extension, API access, bulk processing, custom AI templates, 24/7 priority support

Before you pay, note these rules:

  • No refunds. The pricing FAQ says all subscription purchases are non-refundable because access starts immediately.
  • No published quotas. Neither plan lists monthly word counts, credit amounts or overage fees.
  • A smaller yearly discount. Smodin says annual billing saves 20% compared with paying monthly.
  • Per-check caps. Up to 50,000 characters per detector scan, 12,000 per plagiarism check and up to 12,000 per AI Detection Remover run, depending on plan.
  • Cancellation. You can cancel any time in account settings and keep access until the current billing period ends.

How Essai compares: on yearly billing, Essai's Basic plan costs $9.99 a month as of October 2026, just under Smodin Starter's $10, and Essai's yearly discount of about 30% beats Smodin's 20%. Every Essai plan also states its word allowance up front, from 5,000 words a month on Basic to unlimited on Ultra. See the full breakdown on Essai's pricing page.

Is Smodin accurate?

Smodin calls its detector highly accurate, but the figure depends on which page you read, and Smodin does not link any of its numbers to an outside audit. Here is what Smodin claims, what research on AI detectors shows, and where Essai's detector fits.

What Smodin claims

The AI content detector page advertises "99.8% accuracy," and its FAQ splits that into 99% on human-written text and 99.8% on AI-generated text. The Chrome extension FAQ gives 98%. Smodin's detector case study reports 96.8% overall, 95.9% on AI text and 97.5% on human text across nine languages, while the case studies index says the result covers 12 languages.

A home page FAQ says Smodin was tested head-to-head against leading alternatives, but the case study it points readers to calls its multilingual results "internal benchmarking," names no outside tester and does not state its sample size. In that benchmark, 97.5% accuracy on human text means roughly one human-written sample in 40 was not recognized as human. The detector page's comparison table also rates unnamed competitors at "~85-95%" accuracy without citing a source.

What research says about AI detectors

Smodin was not part of the following studies, but they show how tools in this category can fail:

  • Bias against non-native writers. In a 2023 study in Patterns, Liang and colleagues ran 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers through seven widely used detectors. The detectors misclassified more than half as AI-generated (an average false-positive rate of 61.22%), and 89 of the 91 essays were flagged by at least one detector.
  • OpenAI pulled its own classifier. OpenAI withdrew its AI text classifier on July 20, 2023, "due to its low rate of accuracy." On a challenge set of English texts, OpenAI's evaluation found it caught 26% of AI-written text and mislabeled human text as AI 9% of the time.
  • Small error rates add up. Turnitin says its AI detection aims for a false-positive rate under 1% but that the rate "is not zero." Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023, noting that a 1% rate across the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have meant around 750 papers wrongly labeled.

Why false positives happen

Detectors score statistical patterns such as predictable word choice and uniform sentence rhythm, and careful human writing can show the same patterns. Liang's team found that the TOEFL essays flagged by every detector had significantly lower perplexity, a measure of how predictable text is to a language model. Smodin's own detector page makes a similar point: brief, standardized and "mechanically polished" passages are more likely to be read as machine-written.

So treat any single score as one signal among several. If you are a student facing a flag, keep your drafts and version history and ask how your school handles AI detection. Our guide to AI detection false positives covers next steps, and teachers can follow a fair process for checking student essays for AI.

Where Essai's detector fits

Essai's free AI detector gives you one clear number, an AI probability score from 0 to 100%, and works best on 150 words or more. A free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans. In Essai's internal testing, our detector outperformed other AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.

What users say in Smodin reviews

Trustpilot lists 474 reviews for Smodin but shows no star rating. Its page says "This company's rating is unavailable due to a breach of our guidelines" and "We've removed a number of fake reviews for this company." As of October 16, 2026, 72% of the listed reviews were five-star and 24% were one-star. Smodin's own site footer shows "4.8/5" next to the Trustpilot, Sitejabber and G2 names.

Recurring themes in recent reviews:

  • Billing is the top complaint. Of the four one-star reviews on Trustpilot's first page in October 2026, three involve annual plans or renewals the reviewer did not want, and two of those say a refund was refused. The fourth describes losing access right after canceling and being charged twice.
  • Output still needs a human pass. Some reviewers say parts of the text needed manual edits, and one paying user called the results inconsistent.
  • Praise centers on editing help. Positive reviews mention clearer headings and paragraph structure, fixed tenses and quick summaries.

What Essai users say

Here is how Essai users describe the humanizer in their own words:

"I've tested many alternatives, but nothing comes close to the quality Essai provides." (Priya Sharma, Essai user)
"The quality of the humanized text is remarkable. Essai preserves my ideas while making everything sound natural. My grades have improved significantly since I started using it." (Michael Foster, Essai user)
"Essai has greatly simplified my physics studies. The ability to humanize essays while keeping my original meaning intact has been incredibly helpful for my assignments." (Marcus Thompson, Essai user)

Smodin vs Essai

Smodin spreads its effort across about a dozen writing tools. Essai focuses on the two that matter most when you work with AI-assisted text: a humanizer and a detector. Here is how they compare on published facts as of October 2026.

Why Essai is the better Smodin alternative

  • Built for the job you actually have. Essai puts an AI humanizer and an AI detector side by side, so you can humanize a draft and check it in one workflow.
  • Free humanizing with a clear limit. Try the Essai humanizer on up to 125 words per request with no signup or credit card. Smodin doesn't list its free allowances.
  • Limits you can read before you pay. Basic includes 5,000 words a month at up to 500 words per request, Pro 15,000 at up to 1,500, and Ultra unlimited words at up to 3,000 per request. Smodin's pricing page lists no monthly word counts.
  • A lower yearly entry price. Basic costs $9.99 a month billed yearly as of October 2026, under Smodin Starter's $10, and yearly billing saves about 30% instead of 20%.
  • A humanizer built around your meaning. Essai is designed to keep what you meant while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written. It is also designed to help your text pass popular AI detectors.
  • One clear detector score. The detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100%, and a free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans.

Best Smodin alternatives

Prices and ratings below are as of October 2026.

  1. Essai: best overall. Our top pick for students and writers. It pairs an AI humanizer that keeps your meaning with a free AI detector, publishes word limits for every plan, and starts at $9.99 a month billed yearly.
  2. QuillBot: best for paraphrasing. A broad writing suite with a free AI detector and an AI humanizer, but free humanizing stops at 100 words with "limited usage," refunds are limited, and unexpected auto-renewal charges are a frequent theme in its recent one-star Trustpilot reviews.
  3. Undetectable AI: best for high word volumes. A humanizer with a free detector and plans priced by monthly word volume. Refunds are narrow, and most users can only cancel by email.
  4. GPTZero: best for detection only. A dedicated detector with a free plan of 10,000 words a month, but no humanizer. Paid plans start at $23.99 a month, or $12.99 a month billed annually, and its Trustpilot TrustScore stood at 2.1 from 145 reviews.
  5. Copyleaks: best for detection plus plagiarism checks. It pairs AI detection with a plagiarism checker but has no humanizer, bills in credits that round up per 250 words, and had a Trustpilot TrustScore of 2.7 from 365 reviews.

Verdict

Smodin packs many tools into a low-cost subscription, but its accuracy figures shift from page to page, its humanizer claims contradict each other, its allowances are vague, and every subscription is non-refundable. If you want AI-assisted drafts to read naturally and a fast way to check them before you submit or publish, Essai is the better choice and our top pick for 2026. Start with the free humanizer on up to 125 words per request, run the result through the free detector, and upgrade only when you need more words.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smodin free?

Partly. Smodin lets you try its tools without signing up, and its detector FAQ says that tool has no limits, up to 50,000 characters per check. Free allowances for the other tools are not listed. As of October 2026, Starter costs $12.99 a month ($10 billed annually) and Premium $19.99 ($16 billed annually). If you mainly need a humanizer, Essai's is free for up to 125 words per request with no signup.

Is Smodin's AI detector accurate?

Smodin's figures vary by page. Its detector page advertises 99.8% accuracy, its Chrome extension FAQ says 98%, and its own case study reports 96.8% overall from what it calls internal benchmarking. Smodin does not link any of these numbers to an outside audit. Research on AI detectors shows false positives are more likely with short, formulaic or non-native English writing, so treat any single score as a signal, not proof.

Does Smodin offer refunds?

No. Smodin's pricing FAQ says all subscription purchases are non-refundable because access starts as soon as you pay. You can cancel any time from your account settings and keep access until the end of the billing period. Several recent one-star Trustpilot reviews involve unwanted annual plans or renewals, so confirm the billing period before you check out.

Can Smodin's humanizer guarantee text passes AI detection?

Smodin's own pages disagree. Its humanizer FAQ answers yes when asked whether humanizing guarantees text won't be detected, while the FAQ for its AI Detection Remover calls removal about 80% consistent and recommends re-checking the output. Detectors keep changing, so no humanizer can honestly promise a pass. Essai's humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing and rhythm read naturally. Always follow your school's or employer's rules on AI use.

Is Smodin legit?

Smodin is a real company, Smodin LLC, and says it launched in 2017. Its trust signals are mixed, though. Trustpilot shows its rating as unavailable due to a breach of its guidelines and says it removed a number of fake reviews for the company. Recurring complaints involve unwanted annual plans, and subscriptions are non-refundable, so check your billing period before you pay.

What is the best Smodin alternative?

Essai is our top pick. It pairs an AI humanizer, designed to keep your meaning while making your writing read naturally, with a free AI detector, so you can humanize a draft and check it in one place. The humanizer is free for up to 125 words per request without signup, every plan lists its word allowance, and paid plans start at $9.99 a month billed yearly as of October 2026.
