Undetectable AI is an AI humanizer with a free AI detector, a Chrome extension and an API, sold as monthly word allowances. This Undetectable AI review finds cheap yearly plans with real catches: a trial tied to yearly billing, narrow refunds, email-only cancellation for most users and accuracy claims that rest on thin evidence. Our top pick is Essai.

In our view, Essai is the best AI humanizer and AI detector for students and writers in 2026. Its AI humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and its free AI detector lets you check the result in the same app. You can start free with no signup and no credit card.

This review draws on Undetectable AI's pricing page, product pages, help center, terms and policies as of October 2026, plus published research on AI detection and public ratings on Trustpilot and the Chrome Web Store.

Bottom line: Undetectable AI is cheap per word if you commit to a year and accept strict billing rules. If you want a humanizer and a free AI detector in one place, a lower month-to-month price and no trial to cancel, go with Essai.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Low cost per word on yearly plans. As of October 2026, $60 a year buys 10,000 words a month.
  • A free AI detector. It needs no account and accepts up to 10,000 words per check.
  • One feature set on every plan. Each plan card lists the same features, so you only choose a word allowance.

Cons

  • Narrow refunds. The terms make refunds the exception. Word credits come back only if a humanized submission provably reads as less than 75% human on a reputable AI detector, and only if you ask within 30 days.
  • Email cancellation for most users. Outside California and New York, you cancel by email from your account address before the next renewal, and unused words disappear the moment you cancel.
  • A trial tied to yearly plans. The free trial lasts three days, comes only with a yearly plan and stops at 250 words. Miss the deadline and the annual charge follows.
  • A limited free humanizer. The company says its free Basic model "may be flagged by detectors," and the stronger Undetectable model needs the trial or a paid plan.
  • Thin evidence behind accuracy claims. The detector page leans on a 2024 study that checked one AI-written article and three rewrites of it, with no human writing at all.
  • Polarized reviews. Trustpilot shows a 3.5 TrustScore from 998 reviews as of October 2026, with 40% of reviews at one star and recurring complaints about unexpected charges.
  • A dated privacy policy. It was last updated on March 18, 2023, still names Undetectable LLC rather than Undetectable Inc., and leaves its server location blank.

Key features

Undetectable AI packs plenty of tools into one account, but the ones most people come for carry limits worth knowing before you pay.

AI humanizer

You paste AI-assisted text, then choose one of three models (Basic, Stealth or Undetectable), a purpose such as an essay, article, marketing copy or story, and a reading level from high school to journalist. According to the humanizer page, a single run takes up to 10,000 characters, and the help center says most documents finish in 10 to 30 seconds.

The free version runs only the Basic model, and Undetectable AI itself warns that its output may be flagged. The Undetectable model needs the trial or a paid plan.

The same page claims that fully AI-written content "gets penalized by Google." Google's own guidance on AI-generated content says that "appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines" and that it focuses on the quality of content rather than how it was made.

Free AI detector

The detector is free and works without an account. You paste text or upload a file, and the home page says the results show which sentences read as AI-generated. The detector page allows up to 10,000 words per check, and the company says it covers 50+ languages, with English the most accurate.

The ethics page explains that the detector now returns a single score drawn from several detection layers, and that one of its main signals is how predictable the writing is, measured with entropy and perplexity. The same page calls AI text detectors "a fallible tool" and says one score is not enough to prove cheating.

Chrome extension and Human Typer

The free Chrome extension puts AI detection, the humanizer, a paraphraser, a screenshot question solver and Human Typer on any web page, and premium features follow your plan. Human Typer types pasted text into Google Docs and other editors with simulated typos and pauses, building a revision history that looks hand-typed. It is free for subscribers or $5 a month on its own as of October 2026, per the Human Typer page.

Media detectors, API and other tools

Separate tools check images, audio and video for AI generation, and the image detector takes JPG, PNG and PDF files up to 10 MB. The developer API is billed on its own, starting with a Starter plan at $29 a month for 72,500 words, as of October 2026.

The menu also lists an "AI Plagiarism Checker," but the AI Plagiarism Checker page describes a search for AI-generated text, not a match of your writing against published sources, so it does not replace a traditional plagiarism checker.

Undetectable AI pricing (as of October 2026)

Undetectable AI sells word allowances rather than feature tiers. Every plan card lists the same features, so the real choice is how many words you need each month. Figures below come from Undetectable AI's pricing page as of October 2026.

BillingWords per monthPrice
Yearly10,000$5.00/month, charged $60 a year

The billing rules matter as much as the price. According to the pricing page and the terms of service, last updated January 1, 2025:

  • The trial converts. Yearly plans come with a 3-day free trial capped at 250 words. The pricing page says "No charge today. Cancel anytime before the trial ends," so cancel in time if you don't want the annual charge.
  • Monthly allowances. Plans give a monthly word allowance. For "permanent words with no monthly expiration," the pricing page points you to the business tier. AI detection on the website is listed as unlimited on every plan.
  • Cancellation by email. California and New York residents can cancel in the account dashboard. Everyone else must email from the account address before the next renewal. Cancelling stops future charges but does not refund past periods, and remaining words are lost right away.
  • Narrow refunds. Word credits come back only when a submission provably reads as less than 75% human on a reputable AI detector, and you must ask within 30 days, per section 6.1 of the terms.
  • Mixed refund messages. The help center promises to refund "the cost of the generation, no questions asked" if output is detected, and the pricing page's FAQ markup for search engines mentions a full refund within the first 7 days. The terms are stricter than both, so get any refund promise in writing.
  • Other fine print. Yearly subscriptions last only as long as the company keeps operating, with no refund if it shuts down, and a chargeback does not count as a cancellation.

How Essai compares: Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month on monthly billing, against $19 for Undetectable AI's cheapest monthly plan, and Ultra offers unlimited words where Undetectable AI's standard plans stop at 380,000 a month, as of October 2026. You can also start on Essai's free tier with no signup, no credit card and no trial to cancel. Every plan is on the Essai pricing page.

Is Undetectable AI accurate?

Undetectable AI's accuracy claims are bold, the evidence it publishes is small, and research on AI detectors in general shows real limits.

What the company claims

The detector page headlines "99%+ Accuracy Proven By Independent Tests" and says it catches text from ChatGPT, GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Llama, including paraphrased content. On the humanizer side, the FAQ says the trial's Undetectable model lets you "bypass detectors with 99% confidence," and the help center says its outputs read as human on every AI detector the company has looked at. Apart from one study, these pages give no dataset, sample size or test date.

What the cited study actually tested

The main evidence on the detector page is a peer-reviewed study by Kar et al. in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, published online in May 2024. The authors had ChatGPT 3.5 write one scientific article of under 500 words, rewrote it with three tools (free QuillBot, Grammarly premium and ChatGPT), and ran all four texts through 10 free detectors in January 2024. Undetectable AI labeled every version as AI-generated.

That is a narrow test. The authors list the small number of texts as a limitation and note that detector sensitivity can shift with software updates. No human-written text was included, so the study cannot measure false positives, yet the detector page credits it with "0% false positives on human-written content."

What research says about AI detectors

  • Bias against non-native writers. Liang et al. (2023), later published in Patterns, ran seven widely used detectors on 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers. The average false positive rate was 61.22%, and 89 of the 91 essays were flagged by at least one detector.
  • Rewriting fools detectors. In the same paper, asking ChatGPT to revise its own college admission essays in more literary language cut detection rates from up to 100% to no more than 13%.
  • AI labs have pulled detectors. OpenAI retired its AI text classifier in July 2023 over its "low rate of accuracy," as TechCrunch reported.
  • Vendors admit the risk. In a March 2023 post, Turnitin wrote that "there is still a small risk of false positives."
  • Schools have stepped back. Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023, calculating that a 1% false positive rate across the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have mislabeled around 750 of them.

Why false positives happen

Detectors, Undetectable AI's included by its own description, score how predictable a text is. Language models write predictable prose, but so do plenty of people. Formal academic writing, formulaic assignments, short answers and the simpler sentence patterns common among non-native writers can all look predictable even when a person wrote every word. Undetectable AI's ethics page even admits that humanizers like its own are one reason detectors fail.

In Essai's internal testing, our AI detector outperformed other popular AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.

Essai's AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100% and works best on 150 words or more, and a free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans. Read any detector score, ours included, as a signal to review rather than a verdict. If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives explains what to do next.

What users say

On Trustpilot, Undetectable AI holds a TrustScore of 3.5 out of 5 from 998 reviews as of October 2026. The ratings are split: 51% of reviews give five stars and 40% give one star. The company has replied to 18% of negative reviews, and Trustpilot notes that it has not invited customers to leave reviews recently.

Recent one-star reviews keep coming back to billing:

  • Charges after cancelling. Reviewers describe being billed after they thought they had cancelled.
  • Plans they never meant to buy. Some say they were charged for a plan they did not intend to purchase.
  • Trials billed as a full year. The free trial only applies to yearly plans, and reviewers complain about the annual charge that follows.
  • Cancelling by email. Others are frustrated that most users cannot simply cancel from the dashboard.

Positive reviews mostly praise quick, polite support. The Chrome extension shows 4.7 out of 5 on the Chrome Web Store, but from only 40 ratings.

Why Essai is the better Undetectable AI alternative

  • No trial to cancel. Start on Essai's free tier with no signup or credit card, instead of a 3-day trial that rolls into a yearly charge.
  • A lower month-to-month price. Basic costs $14.99 a month on monthly billing, against $19 for Undetectable AI's cheapest monthly plan, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
  • A humanizer built to keep your meaning. Essai's humanizer is designed to keep what you meant while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written. It is also designed to help text pass popular AI detectors.
  • Humanize and check in one workflow. Rewrite a draft, then scan it with the free AI detector in the same app. A free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans.
  • Room to grow. Pro raises the allowance to 15,000 words a month and 1,500 words per request, and Ultra removes the monthly word cap, with 3,000 words per request and priority support.

Best Undetectable AI alternatives

  1. Essai: best overall. An AI humanizer designed to keep your meaning plus a free AI detector, in one app. The free tier needs no signup or credit card, and Basic starts at $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
  2. Phrasly. A humanizer with a free AI detector, but its $2.00 3-day trial turns into a full plan unless you cancel, and refunds are rare. Read our Phrasly AI review.
  3. QuillBot. A broad writing suite with an AI detector and a humanizer, but free humanizing stops at 100 words, and QuillBot says its humanizer isn't a tool for evading AI detection. See our QuillBot review.
  4. HumaLingo. Detection, rewriting and plagiarism checks in one subscription, but there is no free plan, and the $2.00 7-day access renews at $39.99 a month. See our HumaLingo review.
  5. GPTZero. A dedicated AI detector with no humanizer, so you would still need a second tool to revise a flagged draft. See our GPTZero review.

Undetectable AI review: the verdict

Undetectable AI sells cheap words on yearly plans, but the value comes with strings: a trial that rolls into an annual charge, refunds that are hard to get, cancellation by email for most users and accuracy claims built on a four-text study. For most students and writers, Essai is the better choice. You get a humanizer designed to keep your meaning, a free AI detector in the same workflow, a lower month-to-month price and a free tier with no card and no trial to cancel. Start free, check your draft and upgrade only when you need more words.

Frequently asked questions

Is Undetectable AI free?

Only in part. The AI detector is free and needs no account, and the humanizer offers a free Basic model, but Undetectable AI says that model's output may be flagged by detectors. The stronger Undetectable model needs a paid plan or a 3-day trial that comes only with yearly plans and is capped at 250 words, as of October 2026.

How much does Undetectable AI cost?

As of October 2026, yearly billing starts at $5 a month, charged as $60 a year, for 10,000 words a month. Monthly billing starts at $19 for 20,000 words, then $31 for 35,000 words and $42 for 50,000 words. For comparison, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month on monthly billing or $9.99 a month billed yearly, and its free tier needs no credit card.

Is Undetectable AI accurate?

Undetectable AI advertises 99%+ detector accuracy and points to a 2024 study in which it flagged all four AI-written test texts. That study used one ChatGPT article and three rewritten versions of it, with no human writing, so it cannot show how often real human work gets flagged. Published research finds that detectors often misjudge non-native English writing, so treat any single score as a signal rather than proof.

Can you get a refund from Undetectable AI?

Rarely. The terms of service make refunds the exception. Word credits come back only if a humanized submission provably reads as less than 75% human on a reputable AI detector, and you must ask within 30 days. The help center sounds more generous than the terms, so keep the flagged text and the detector result if you plan to ask.

Is Undetectable AI legit?

It is a real product run by Undetectable Inc. As of October 2026, its Trustpilot profile shows a 3.5 TrustScore from 998 reviews, with 40% of reviews at one star, and recent complaints focus on unexpected charges, trials billed as a full year and cancellation problems. Read the trial, refund and cancellation terms carefully before you enter a card.

How do I cancel Undetectable AI?

According to its terms, California and New York residents can cancel from the account dashboard. Everyone else must cancel by email, sent from the address on the account with enough detail to verify ownership, before the next renewal. Chargebacks, contact forms and social media messages do not count as cancelling, and any remaining words are lost as soon as you cancel.

What is the best Undetectable AI alternative?

Essai is the best Undetectable AI alternative for most students and writers. Its AI humanizer is designed to make AI-assisted text read naturally while keeping your meaning, and its free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100% in the same app. The free tier needs no signup or credit card, and paid plans start at $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.
