BrandWell's free AI checker is gone as a web page. Since August 2026, its address has redirected to a free Moxby browser Mod that flags robotic writing patterns but, by its own listing, cannot tell whether a person or AI wrote a text. This BrandWell AI Detector review explains the catch and why Essai is our top pick.

BrandWell built the original tool for marketers, agencies, bloggers and freelancers who wanted a quick read on a draft. If you need to know how likely it is that a text was AI-generated, a style hint will not get you there. Essai's free AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent with nothing to install, and an AI humanizer sits in the same app. That is why Essai is our pick for the best AI detector and the best AI humanizer for students and writers in 2026.

Below you'll find what BrandWell's detector does now, its limits, its prices as of October 2026, what is known about its accuracy, what users say and how it compares with Essai.

If you searched for the BrandWell AI checker and landed on Moxby, that is expected. An Internet Archive capture shows the detector page still live on August 9, 2026, and a capture from August 29, 2026 shows it redirecting to the Moxby Marketplace listing, where it still points as of October 2026. BrandWell's footer calls Moxby its "sister product," and its current product directory lists nine products with no standalone AI detector.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free. The Mod runs on Moxby's Free plan, which costs $0 (as of October 2026).
  • Longer checks than before. Each review covers up to 10,000 characters, up from 2,500 on the old brandwell.ai page.
  • Sentence-level highlights. You can see which passages read as repetitive or generic.

Cons

  • Extension required. The detector runs only inside the Moxby browser extension. Moxby lists Chrome and other Chromium browsers, Edge and Firefox, and tells Safari users to switch to Chrome or Firefox.
  • No authorship answer. The listing states that the tool does not determine whether a person or AI wrote the text, which is the question most people bring to an AI detector.
  • No score to track. The listing describes a guidance label and highlights, with no numeric score you could compare from one draft to the next.
  • Adults only. Moxby's terms require users to be at least 18, or the age of majority where they live, which rules out many high school students.
  • No accuracy data and no reviews. Neither the listing nor BrandWell's archived detector page gives an accuracy rate, and the listing shows no user reviews yet.
  • No humanizer. The old page offered a "Humanize it" button. The Mod only highlights passages and leaves every rewrite to you.
  • Fewer free tools. The addresses of BrandWell's old free plagiarism checker and AI image detector now redirect to its home page.

Key features

BrandWell's detector now does one job: it reviews writing style. Here is what that covers and where it stops.

Writing-pattern review

Each review takes up to 10,000 characters and ends with an overall guidance label. According to the listing, the Mod looks for repeated phrasing, similar sentence structures, predictable flow, generic language, weak transitions and thin explanations. Moxby says it applies "strict pattern thresholds," so short, technical, templated or heavily edited human writing can still trigger it.

Sentence-level highlights

The Mod marks passages that "may benefit from more variation, specificity, clarity, or voice." That is editing advice rather than a verdict. The listing tells writers to improve the draft instead of chasing a score and says the goal is not "to pass or defeat a detector."

Runs only inside Moxby

Moxby is a browser extension that adds Mods, meaning small apps or changes to websites you already use. The detector is one of those Mods, and the listing credits it to an individual publisher rather than to BrandWell or Moxby.

Your text goes "through the Moxby gateway to the analysis service," but the listing does not name that service. Moxby's privacy policy says Moxby does not use private prompts, page contents or tool output to train a Moxby-owned general-purpose AI model. That policy does not govern independently published Mods, though, and the listing does not say whether it applies here. Moxby advises against submitting confidential or sensitive text unless your organization's policies allow it.

What happened to the original BrandWell AI checker

An archived copy of the original detector page from August 2026 shows what went away. The old tool accepted pasted text, a URL or an uploaded file, capped each check at 2,500 characters, worked in English only and offered a "Humanize it" button. Its FAQ said the tool "should not be used as a substitute for human judgment," and the current listing does not say whether the Mod uses the same model.

AI detection inside RankWell

BrandWell still ties paid AI detection to RankWell, its SEO content platform. The RankWell page describes a review step that uses "configured detection and review tools to inspect the text and sentence-level signals," and BrandWell's terms list AI detection among RankWell's content services. RankWell starts at $249 a month as of October 2026, so it is built for content teams, not for a quick check.

BrandWell AI Detector pricing (as of October 2026)

The Mod itself costs nothing. You only pay if you want more from Moxby or from BrandWell's content platform. Figures come from Moxby's pricing page and BrandWell's pricing page.

PlanPrice (as of October 2026)What it means for AI detection
Moxby Free$0Runs free Marketplace Mods, including the AI Content Detector
Moxby Plus$25/month or $250/yearNot needed for detection; adds chats, Mod creation and up to 10 active Mods
Moxby Pro$50/month or $500/yearNot needed for detection; up to 25 active Mods
Moxby Max$100/month or $1,000/yearNot needed for detection; unlimited active Mods
RankWell Essentials$249/monthSEO content platform; 25 articles and 20,000 rewrite words a month
RankWell Growth$499/month50 articles and 50,000 rewrite words a month, adds Link Builder
RankWell Scale$999/month100 articles a month, unlimited rewrite words, Link Builder included

Read the billing rules before you pay for anything in either lineup:

  • Refunds. Moxby's terms say fees are generally nonrefundable, with no credit for a partly used month or year. BrandWell gives a first standalone RankWell purchase a 72-hour refund window, and only if no more than two articles were generated and nothing was published or exported.
  • Limits. The Mod caps each check at 10,000 characters, and RankWell plans come with fixed monthly article allowances.

Essai's free tier covers more ground. The detector runs as a web app with no extension, a free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans, and the humanizer handles up to 125 words per request with no signup or credit card. When you need more, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026, with unlimited AI detection and 5,000 humanizer words a month, while BrandWell's paid AI detection sits inside RankWell at $249 a month. Every plan is on the Essai pricing page.

Is BrandWell AI Detector accurate?

Nobody can tell from public data. Neither BrandWell nor Moxby publishes accuracy figures for the current Mod, and the listing says outright that it does not identify AI authorship.

What BrandWell and Moxby say

The Moxby listing calls each result "an approximate editorial signal" and warns that results "are approximate and can be wrong." It adds that a strong robotic-writing signal "does not mean AI wrote the text." BrandWell's terms take the same line on RankWell's AI-detection results, which "may be incomplete, inaccurate, or unsuitable for a particular purpose."

BrandWell's AI Instructions page goes further. It asks people and AI systems describing the company not to make accuracy, reliability, superiority or quality claims about an AI detector.

What independent research says

Published research on detectors like this one points the same way:

  • Bias against non-native writers. A 2023 Stanford study in Patterns (Liang et al.) ran seven widely used GPT detectors on 91 TOEFL essays by non-native English writers. The detectors labeled more than half of them AI-generated, with an average false-positive rate of 61.3 percent, and 97.8 percent of the essays were flagged by at least one detector.
  • OpenAI pulled its own classifier. OpenAI retired its AI text classifier on July 20, 2023, "due to its low rate of accuracy." On OpenAI's challenge set, it caught 26 percent of AI-written text and mislabeled human writing as AI 9 percent of the time.
  • A broad academic study found weak results. Researchers who evaluated 12 public tools and two commercial systems (Weber-Wulff et al., International Journal for Educational Integrity, 2023) concluded the tools were "neither accurate nor reliable" and leaned toward calling AI text human-written. Obfuscation made results worse.
  • Large vendors admit errors too. Turnitin aims for a false-positive rate under 1 percent and acknowledges that its rate "is not zero." Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023, noting that at a 1 percent false-positive rate, around 750 of the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have been wrongly labeled.

Why false positives happen

Many detectors lean on predictability. Liang's team noted that most GPT detectors use text perplexity, a measure of how easy each next word is to guess, and writing with a narrower vocabulary scores as more predictable, so it looks machine-like. Moxby's own listing names short, technical, templated, highly edited and repetitive writing as risk cases.

If your own writing gets flagged, our guide to AI detection false positives walks through next steps, and teachers can follow a fair process for checking student essays. If you use AI tools for coursework, check your course policy first.

Essai's AI detector returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent and works best on 150 words or more. In Essai's internal testing, our AI detector outperformed other AI detectors on many of the criteria we track.

What users say

Public feedback on BrandWell's detector is close to nonexistent. As of October 16, 2026, the Moxby Marketplace listing for the AI Content Detector shows "No reviews yet," and it accepts reviews only from verified installs.

BrandWell's Trustpilot page is unclaimed and lists a single review: a one-star complaint from April 2025 about being billed after canceling a paid subscription. It concerns billing rather than the detector, but it is the only rating on the page.

What Essai users say

Here is how Essai users describe the product in their own words:

"I've tested many alternatives, but nothing comes close to the quality Essai provides." (Priya Sharma, Essai user)
"The quality of the humanized text is remarkable. Essai preserves my ideas while making everything sound natural. My grades have improved significantly since I started using it." (Michael Foster, Essai user)
"I used to spend hours rewriting essays. Now Essai does it in seconds. The text humanizer is incredibly accurate and saves me so much time on every assignment." (Robert Kim, Essai user)

BrandWell AI Detector vs Essai

The Moxby Mod reviews writing style. Essai tells you how likely a text is to be AI-generated and adds a humanizer for the passages you want to rework. Prices are as of October 2026.

Why Essai is the better BrandWell AI Detector alternative

  • Nothing to install. BrandWell's detector runs only inside the Moxby extension, and Moxby tells Safari users to switch browsers. Essai's AI detector is a web app: open it, paste your text and get a score.
  • A score, not a label. The Mod returns a guidance label and, by its own listing, does not determine who wrote the text. Essai returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, so you can compare one draft with the next.
  • Detect and humanize in one app. Essai's humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, so AI-assisted text reads as human-written. Humanize a draft, then check it, without switching tools.
  • Free access that goes further. A free Essai account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans, and the humanizer's free tier needs no signup or credit card. BrandWell's free Mod points at passages but leaves every rewrite to you.
  • A fraction of the price for paid detection. As of October 2026, Essai Basic costs $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, with unlimited AI detection. BrandWell's paid AI detection sits inside RankWell, which starts at $249 a month.

Best BrandWell AI Detector alternatives

  • Essai: best overall. Our top pick for students and writers: a free AI detector with a 0 to 100 percent score, unlimited scans on a free account and an AI humanizer in the same app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month as of October 2026.
  • GPTZero: a detector built mainly for teachers and students. The free plan covers 10,000 words a month, Premium costs $23.99 a month as of October 2026, there is no humanizer, and its Trustpilot score was 2.1 out of 5 from 145 reviews in October 2026.
  • Originality.ai: a checking suite for publishers and editors who review other people's copy. The free tier allows three AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words each, and paid credits lapse when the billing cycle closes.
  • Sapling AI Detector: a web checker with sentence scores, but free checks cover only the first 2,000 characters, and Sapling's privacy policy says submitted content is stored and used to improve the service.
  • Grammarly AI Detector: a free web checker that returns one overall score. Seeing flagged passages, or checking inside Google Docs and Word, takes a paid plan, and Pro costs $30 a month on monthly billing as of October 2026.

Verdict: our BrandWell AI Detector review

BrandWell's free AI checker now lives on as a Moxby browser Mod: free, but extension-only, limited to adults and, by its own listing, unable to tell you whether a person or AI wrote your text. That makes it a style checker rather than an AI detector you can lean on. In our view, Essai is the best BrandWell AI Detector alternative and our top pick for 2026, with a free AI detector that returns a 0 to 100 percent score, unlimited scans on a free account and an AI humanizer in the same web app. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, as of October 2026, so you can check a draft, humanize what needs work and check it again in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BrandWell AI Detector still free?

Yes, as of October 2026. BrandWell's old detector page now redirects to the AI Content Detector Mod on the Moxby Marketplace, which runs on Moxby's Free plan at no cost. The catch is setup: you have to install the Moxby browser extension first, and Moxby's terms require users to be at least 18. Essai's AI detector is also free and runs as a web app, so there is nothing to install.

What happened to the BrandWell AI checker?

In August 2026, the detector page on brandwell.ai began redirecting to a Mod on the Moxby Marketplace. Moxby is run by Workado, LLC, the company behind BrandWell. The old web tool, which checked up to 2,500 characters and could pull text from a URL or a file, is gone, and the old free plagiarism checker and AI image detector addresses now point to the BrandWell home page.

Is the BrandWell AI detector accurate?

Neither BrandWell nor Moxby publishes an accuracy rate for the current Mod. The listing calls its results approximate, says they can be wrong, and states that the tool does not determine whether a person or AI wrote the text. Research on AI detectors in general has found high false-positive rates for some human writers, so treat any label as a reason to reread, not a verdict.

Can teachers use the BrandWell AI detector to prove a student used AI?

No. The Moxby listing says its results should not be used as proof in academic, employment or disciplinary decisions, and that short, technical, templated or heavily edited human writing can be flagged. A fair process looks at drafts and earlier work, asks the student how they wrote the piece, and follows the school's written AI policy rather than the output of any single detector.

Does the BrandWell AI detector include a humanizer?

No. The original brandwell.ai checker offered a Humanize it button, but the Moxby Mod that replaced it only highlights passages to edit, and its listing says the goal is not to pass or defeat a detector. Essai's AI humanizer is designed to keep your meaning while making phrasing, rhythm and word choice read naturally, and its free tier handles up to 125 words per request with no signup.

What is the best BrandWell AI Detector alternative?

Essai is our top pick. Its free AI detector runs as a web app with no extension and returns an AI probability score from 0 to 100 percent, and a free account adds detailed reports and unlimited scans. Essai also includes an AI humanizer in the same app, so you can revise a draft and check it in one workflow. As of October 2026, paid plans start at $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly.
